Seasonal and Winter Jobs in Calgary: Where to Look and How to Apply

November 6, 2026

Winter is a slower hiring season in Alberta, but short-term work does not disappear. Retailers add holiday staff, the City posts outdoor roles, and some employers use seasonal hires to find permanent ones. Here is where to look and how to improve your odds.

What seasonal work looks like in Calgary

Retail and hospitality. Stores in malls and shopping districts hire seasonal sales associates for the holiday rush. Bookstores, toy shops, tea shops and cafes regularly post these roles in November. Competition for general retail roles tends to be high in winter, so apply early.

City of Calgary outdoor roles. The City hires seasonal staff in Parks, Recreation, Roads, Water and Waste & Recycling. Seasonal postings usually run from January to April on calgary.ca/careers, and some winter roles, such as park maintenance, run roughly December to March. Some positions may require a City Operator's Permit, so check the posting before you apply.

Snow and property services. Snow removal and property maintenance companies hire when the snow starts. These roles are often shift-based and can start quickly.

Warehouse and delivery. Holiday shipping volume pushes warehouses and couriers to add staff. Check postings for start dates, since many wrap up in early January.

When to apply

  • Retail and warehouse: now through early December. Holiday roles fill fast.

  • Snow and property services: as soon as you can. Demand follows the first heavy snowfall.

  • City of Calgary seasonal roles: watch for postings from January onward, and set a weekly reminder to check.

How to stand out

  1. Say you are available for the whole season. Employers hire seasonal staff for reliability. Name your dates, including weekends and holidays.

  2. Keep your resume short and specific. One page, with any customer service, equipment or safety experience near the top. Our post on resume tweaks for applicant tracking systems covers the basics.

  3. Apply to more than one. Seasonal postings close quickly. Sending ten focused applications beats waiting on two.

  4. Check the posting is real. See Is that Calgary job real? before you send personal details.

  5. Follow up. A short message a few days after applying keeps you in view when a manager is filling shifts.

Check the real pay

Seasonal roles are often hourly and hours can vary week to week. Use the YYC Jobs Pay Calculator to see what an hourly wage means after deductions before you accept.

Turn a short-term job into a longer one

  • Ask your supervisor early whether the role can extend or lead to permanent work.

  • Be the person who covers a shift and shows up on time.

  • Ask for a reference before your last day.

  • Keep applying elsewhere through the season. Our 15-minute weekly routine makes that manageable.
